High above the medina of Essaouira, where Atlantic light meets sea spray, Villa Maroc has been capturing travellers’ imaginations for three decades. This discreet riad, gazing out over the ocean, is far more than a charming hotel: it is a labour of love born of the union between Swiss-German host Cornelia Hendry and Moroccan engineer Abderrahim Ezzaher, deeply rooted in his country’s culture. Their daughter, Mounia, grew up within these walls and now embodies this family saga, where two worlds meet and blend. At Villa Maroc, authenticity and refinement are inseparable, offering guests an experience that feels both intimately local and quietly sophisticated. Find out more at villa-maroc.com.

The birth of a dream: Villa Maroc, a family story

Villa Maroc has always been a family affair. In 1991, while on holiday in Essaouira, Cornelia Hendry and Abderrahim Ezzaher fell for a modest little riad that was then a surfers’ hostel. “It was love at first sight,” recalls their daughter, Mounia Ezzaher, who now runs the property. The couple came from very different worlds – Cornelia, a cooking teacher passionate about entertaining, and Abderrahim, a trained engineer – but shared the same desire to create somewhere truly distinctive. In 1995 they took the plunge, transforming the riad into a characterful hotel, keeping its soul intact while introducing contemporary comfort.

From the early years, guests’ enthusiasm was clear. The understated charm of the house, the simplicity of the materials and the blend of Moroccan hospitality with Swiss efficiency created a captivating setting. Stone walls, tadelakt floors and touches of local craftwork elevate every corner. This focus on detail, and the determination to preserve authenticity while adding modern comfort, have made Villa Maroc a benchmark address for travellers.

Over time, Villa Maroc expanded with the acquisition of neighbouring houses. Cornelia and Abderrahim restored these historic buildings with meticulous care, ensuring each room retained its character while meeting the expectations of contemporary guests. By combining their skills and cultures they shaped a distinctive identity for Villa Maroc. Today, Mounia represents the new generation, bringing fresh energy while remaining true to the essence of the villa. She grew up here, steeped in its history and spirit, and now works alongside her parents to ensure this singular place both continues and evolves. Together, they oversee every aspect of the property, making sure the experience remains as memorable for long-standing regulars as it is for first-time visitors.

This family set-up allows the values and spirit of Villa Maroc to be passed on naturally, while maintaining the close attention to detail that has built its reputation. The hotel now has 21 rooms, each one different, where comfort meets character. The story of Villa Maroc is the story of a dream fulfilled: a family who turned a small riad into an essential address.

Hospitality, a way of life

One of the things that truly sets Villa Maroc apart from other places in the region is the quality of its welcome. For Cornelia and Abderrahim, hospitality is a way of life. “We’ve always wanted our guests to feel at home,” says Mounia. From the moment they arrive, visitors are greeted with the warmth Morocco is known for, and every detail is considered to create a singular experience. A genuine smile, a glass of mint tea served in the courtyard, a thoughtful touch waiting in their room – everything is designed to make guests feel genuinely cared for.

Drawing on her experience as a cooking teacher, Cornelia has always wanted the table to be central to the Villa Maroc experience. Breakfast here has become something of an institution. Each morning, guests gather in cosy lounges or on the terrace with its sweeping sea views to enjoy carefully prepared dishes. Fresh bread, homemade jams and Moroccan specialities such as msemen (layered pancakes) and batbout (small breads) turn the first meal of the day into an introduction to local flavours. “We want our guests to start their day feeling good in every sense,” adds Mounia.

Rooms with authentic charm

Villa Maroc also stands out for the individuality of its rooms, all tastefully decorated and faithful to traditional Moroccan riad architecture. With wide-open views of the ocean or the medina of Essaouira, each one has its own atmosphere. “Every space has been designed to reflect the spirit of the house, while offering guests the comfort they need to truly unwind,” explains Mounia.

The materials used throughout are rooted in local craftsmanship: tadelakt for the walls, zellige tiles for the floors, hand-carved woodwork. Every element has been carefully chosen to create a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity. Among the highlights of the villa is a room with near 360-degree views over the Atlantic Ocean and the medina, an incomparable experience for travellers looking to disconnect and find calm. Waking up to the immensity of the ocean, with only the sound of the waves, is a rare luxury Villa Maroc offers its guests.

Local cuisine and a sensory experience

At Villa Maroc, the culinary experience is a journey in itself. Rooted in traditional Moroccan recipes and enriched with Swiss influences, the food is both straightforward and refined. In the evening, the villa’s restaurant comes to life around dishes prepared with local, fresh, seasonal ingredients. Tagines, couscous and other specialities are cooked with produce that partly comes from the family’s own agricultural project. Cornelia and Abderrahim have in fact developed a farming venture alongside the hotel, producing argan oil and olive oil, used both in the kitchen and in the spa.

The gastronomic experience at Villa Maroc goes well beyond tasting. Mounia also invites guests to join cooking workshops, where they can learn to prepare traditional dishes under the guidance of experienced chefs. “We wanted our guests to discover the richness of Moroccan cuisine by getting hands-on,” explains Mounia. These classes give visitors the chance to step into the local culinary world, learn the secrets of Moroccan spices and leave with flavour-filled memories.

A project in constant evolution

Villa Maroc is not frozen in time. Despite its rich past and 30 years of history, this character hotel continues to evolve to meet its guests’ expectations. Mounia and her family are considering several expansion and modernisation projects to offer even more comfort and services. One major undertaking is the renovation of the terrace. “We decided to close the hotel for the first time in 34 years in order to carry out this work,” says Mounia. The aim is to turn the terrace into a true living space, with a new bar and restaurant.

This new addition will allow guests to make the most of the exceptional ocean views while enjoying dishes inspired by local produce. For Mounia, this expansion marks a new chapter in the Villa Maroc story, while remaining faithful to the spirit that has made it so successful.

A relationship woven across generations

What makes Villa Maroc particularly special is the relationship the Ezzaher family has built with guests over the years. With its warm, intimate feel, the hotel has attracted a loyal following, and many visitors return year after year. “We have guests who have been coming for more than 30 years,” says Mounia. “Some proposed here, spent their honeymoon here and now return with their children and grandchildren.”

This intergenerational bond reflects a place that goes beyond standard hospitality. Villa Maroc becomes a setting for memories and shared family moments. “It’s always moving to see several generations of the same family come back to us. It shows we’ve managed to create somewhere people feel good, just as they would at home,” says Mounia with pride. This loyalty reflects not only the quality of the service, but also the genuine care shown to every guest.
