In sun-drenched Sicily, between turquoise sea and rolling olive-clad hills, Verdura Resort rises like a contemporary mirage on the ancient lands of Agrigento. Envisioned by Sir Rocco Forte as a Mediterranean sanctuary, this 230-hectare estate blends the raw beauty of nature with rare architectural grace. Time seems to slow with every moment here, and each detail reflects the island’s soul. Step into a place where luxury is expressed through silence, light and pure emotion.

A visionary project in the heart of Sicily: the story of Verdura Resort

Set on Sicily’s south-west coast, between the historic towns of Sciacca and Agrigento, Verdura Resort is the result of the vision of Sir Rocco Forte, founder of the Rocco Forte Hotels group. Opened in 2009, this exceptional property was conceived as a retreat of understated luxury, where nature, sport and wellbeing come together in rare harmony. Far removed from ostentatious hotels, Verdura favours clean lines and quiet elegance, true to the Mediterranean spirit.

The estate spans more than 230 hectares of unspoilt Sicilian countryside, edged by almost two kilometres of private shoreline. From the outset, the ambition was clear: to create a destination that respects its environment while offering absolute comfort. Once devoted to agriculture, the land was carefully transformed to host a luxury resort with a main hotel, private villas, two Kyle Phillips–designed golf courses, a 4,000 m² spa and several restaurants.

It is also a place of renewal. In 2018, after the Verdura River flooded, the resort undertook an ambitious restoration of parts of its landscaping, deepening its commitment to sustainability. This blend of history, nature and contemporary luxury recalls the spirit of Domaine de Pellegrin in Bormes-les-Mimosas, where the environment is both the setting and a key part of the stay.

A striking natural setting of sea, hills and olive groves

What sets Verdura Resort apart at first glance is the unembellished beauty of its surroundings. Bordered by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, the estate opens onto an intense sweep of scenery, from untamed beaches and rolling hills to fields of century-old olive trees. Every element of the landscape seems carefully placed, like a living canvas.

The resort itself blends discreetly into this backdrop. Low-rise buildings in natural tones follow the contours of the land. Mediterranean gardens, designed by landscape architect Flavio Albanese, extend this sense of harmony. Lemon trees, prickly pears and palms line the paths to the suites and shared spaces, offering shade and scent at every step.

The private beach, stretching for nearly two kilometres, is a rarity in the Mediterranean. Free from any urban development, it invites peaceful swims and slow walks along the shore. More active guests can explore hiking trails that wind through the surrounding hills, while nature lovers can opt for mountain-biking excursions or guided botanical walks within the estate.

As at Splendido in Portofino, the landscape is not just a backdrop: it embodies the spirit of the place, an invitation to slow down, to look around, and to reconnect with what matters.

A refined, highly tailored hotel experience

At Verdura Resort, luxury is not about piling on services but about an unfailing attention to detail and to guests’ wellbeing. The experience begins at arrival: a warm welcome, seamless check-in and an introduction to the estate that sets the tone for a stay designed around each guest.

The resort’s 203 rooms, suites and villas all look out over the sea or the gardens. Generously sized (up to 60 m² for Deluxe Rooms), they all feature private terraces, large picture windows and a quietly elegant décor that combines natural materials with Sicilian craftsmanship. The villas, meanwhile, are true luxury holiday homes, with private pools, panoramic living rooms and dedicated butler service.

Service is discreet yet ever-present, one of Verdura’s great strengths. Every guest is treated as an individual, with thoughtful touches throughout: arranging private activities, bespoke spa treatments, menus tailored to dietary preferences and more. The multilingual staff, trained to the highest standards, embody a Mediterranean style of hospitality that is both warm and impeccably professional.

Staying at Verdura ultimately feels like pressing pause in complete comfort, with the instant ease of feeling at home in a very special setting.

Sicilian cuisine elevated by exceptional chefs

Verdura Resort celebrates Sicily’s culinary abundance with a gastronomic offering that balances tradition and creativity. Executive chef Fulvio Pierangelini, a leading figure in Italian cuisine, oversees all of the resort’s restaurants, ensuring consistent quality and a distinctive character.

The main restaurant, “Zagara”, serves refined dishes inspired by local ingredients. Citrus from the garden, freshly caught fish, estate-produced olive oil and aromatic herbs grown on site come together in plates full of flavour. The sea-facing terrace adds a unique sensory dimension to every meal.

For something more relaxed, “Amare” is the place to go. Set on the beach, this grill and seafood restaurant offers a convivial atmosphere, ideal for a leisurely lunch with your feet in the sand. The “Granita” bar, meanwhile, specialises in crafted cocktails and Sicilian sweet treats, perfect for an aperitivo at sunset.

The resort also hosts cooking classes, tastings of local wines and private dinners in the olive groves. These immersive experiences allow guests to discover Sicily’s gastronomic soul in a setting that is both authentic and polished.

A wellbeing and sports retreat for a complete reset

Verdura Spa is one of the cornerstones of the resort’s wellness experience. With 4,000 m² dedicated to relaxation, it ranks among the largest and most comprehensive in Italy. Drawing on Mediterranean traditions and local resources, the spa offers a holistic approach to treatments, focused on the balance between body and mind.

Facilities include four heated outdoor thalasso pools, a hammam, a Finnish sauna, a state-of-the-art gym and an open-air yoga pavilion. Treatments – massages, wraps, facials – use natural products, often sourced from the estate itself. The Rocco Forte Rituals programme, developed exclusively for the group’s hotels, is showcased here in its most complete form.

On the sports side, the estate features two 18-hole golf courses designed by renowned architect Kyle Phillips, a tennis centre with six courts, a football pitch, and classes ranging from Pilates and boxing to meditation. Children are well catered for with Verdùland, a club created especially for them, combining games, discoveries and educational activities.

This approach to wellbeing, both comprehensive and deeply rooted in the local setting, positions Verdura among Europe’s benchmark destinations for restorative travel.
