InterContinental Khao Yai: Vintage Train Carriages Reimagined as Luxury Suites

Deep in the lush forests of Khao Yai, a legendary train has come to a permanent halt. At the InterContinental Khao Yai, maverick designer Bill Bensley has transformed authentically restored railway carriages into sumptuous suites, like cabins on a tropical Orient Express. Blending railway nostalgia with contemporary refinement, this remarkable hideaway offers an immobile journey, suspended in time. Perhaps the most memorable voyage is the one where you never leave your bed.

A Bill Bensley vision, where railway heritage meets contemporary luxury

Behind the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort stands celebrated architect and designer Bill Bensley, renowned for his exuberant creations that blend art, nature and storytelling. Set in Nakhon Ratchasima province on the edge of Khao Yai National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the resort brings to life a singular idea: to revive the golden age of Thailand’s railways through an exceptional hotel experience. With this project, Bensley salutes Pak Chong station and the colonial-era railway that shaped the region in the 20th century.

The property doesn’t just draw inspiration from the past – it stages it with remarkable fidelity. Fifteen former train carriages, carefully restored, have been transformed into lavish suites and villas, immersing guests in a retro-chic world. This original concept, still rare in Asia, gives the hotel a strong sense of character, akin to the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang, another grand address that celebrates colonial heritage with poise.

When InterContinental Khao Yai opened in 2022, it marked a new chapter for high-end tourism in this still-unspoilt part of Thailand. By pairing rich narrative, bold design and five-star comfort, the resort offers more than a place to stay: it stages local history in a way that invites both escape and reflection.

Suites in train carriages: a still journey with rare finesse

Sleeping in a train carriage has never felt so refined. Nineteen suites and villas, all housed in authentic, restored railway cars, offer an experience that is both immersive and luxurious. Sourced from across Thailand, the carriages have been meticulously refitted to create generous interiors, styled with a blend of Art Deco, colonial references and contemporary Asian accents.

Each suite has its own visual personality, with period details carefully preserved: brass light fixtures, glossy wood panelling, original handles. The largest villas, complete with private plunge pools and terraces overlooking Swan Lake, evoke the private salons of grand trains of the past, while discreetly incorporating every modern comfort: king-size beds, marble bathtubs, subtle air conditioning and high-end sound systems.

The sense of exclusivity is heightened by the way the carriages are laid out, scattered through a quiet, wooded landscape far from the city’s buzz. Unlike vertical hotels such as The Standard Bangkok, whose draw lies in its urban panorama, InterContinental Khao Yai is all about intimacy and connection to nature, offering a cocoon-like retreat where time seems to slow. A journey within the journey, without leaving your bed.

An exceptional natural setting on the edge of Khao Yai Reserve

The resort stretches across more than 19 hectares of greenery, punctuated by man-made lakes and lush forest. Just a two-hour drive from Bangkok, it is an ideal escape for city dwellers craving a genuine break. Khao Yai National Park, one of Thailand’s oldest, lies only a few kilometres away, with hiking trails, dramatic waterfalls and remarkable biodiversity, from wild elephants and gibbons to hornbills.

The landscape design, also by Bensley, weaves the buildings and carriages into their natural backdrop. Wooden walkways wind between the trees, leading to quiet lounging areas tucked into the foliage. Benches, fountains and art pieces line the paths, creating the feel of a secret garden made for contemplation.

The central lake, nicknamed “Swan Lake”, is home to black and white swans, adding a poetic touch to the setting. Guests can take a boat out onto the water or simply watch the sky’s reflection at sunset. This close relationship with nature sets InterContinental Khao Yai apart from many more urban luxury resorts, such as the Rosewood Bangkok, offering instead a sensory immersion in a tranquil, preserved environment.

Globetrotting cuisine, from French brasserie style to Asian flavours

The culinary offering at InterContinental Khao Yai lives up to its railway-inspired concept. The signature restaurant, Somying’s Kitchen, takes its cues from classic dining cars, with a colonial brasserie feel and an eclectic menu. Refined Thai dishes, reimagined with a contemporary twist, share the bill with French favourites such as pepper-crusted beef fillet and pan-seared foie gras.

More unexpected still is Poirot Brasserie, set within one of the restored carriages, which pays tribute to Agatha Christie and the Orient Express. The menu is distinctly European, with Belgian and French influences, and the attentive service recalls the golden days of luxury rail travel. Cocktail lovers gravitate to the Tea Carriage, a bar carriage that serves as a tea lounge by day and a cocktail bar by night, with a drinks list inspired by Asian railway stopovers.

Room service means you can enjoy the same dishes in the privacy of your suite, perhaps as a private dinner on the terrace overlooking the lake. The whole gastronomic programme mirrors the spirit of the resort: a celebration of travel, elegance and culinary diversity, where every meal feels like a new stage of the journey.

Wellbeing and activities: a resort designed for renewal

InterContinental Khao Yai is more than a charming hotel; it is conceived as a true sanctuary of wellbeing. Its spa, housed in a wooden pavilion by the lake, offers a range of treatments rooted in Thai traditions and Asian rituals. Guests can book hot herbal compress massages, facials using natural ingredients, and reflexology sessions, all delivered by skilled therapists in a softly lit, soothing atmosphere.

For those who prefer to stay active, the resort organises sunrise yoga sessions, guided walks through the surrounding forest and cycling excursions to explore the area. Thai cooking classes and tastings of local wines are also held regularly, shining a light on regional produce.

The outdoor pool, lined with loungers and wrapped in greenery, opens onto wide views of distant hills. Families are well looked after too, with services dedicated to children, from creative workshops to mini nature excursions. The resort strikes a balance between relaxation and discovery, in a setting where every detail encourages guests to slow down and savour the moment.
